Hillside stormwater finds the low basement
Downhill runoff during heavy rain overwhelms grading and foundation drainage and enters below grade. The house that floods is often not the one the leak started at.
Water extraction, fire and smoke cleanup, mold remediation, and sewage cleanup for Troy homes and businesses.
01 Troy, Rensselaer County
Troy is built on a hillside above the Hudson, and two creeks, the Poesten Kill and the Wynants Kill, run down through it to the river. Both have long, documented flood histories: major events on the Poesten Kill are recorded through the 1800s and repeatedly across the twentieth century.
That topography means Troy gets two different water problems. There is creek flooding in the low corridors, and there is straightforward hillside stormwater, where heavy rain runs downhill and finds the lowest basement on the block.
The housing taking that water is largely nineteenth-century brick and brownstone row construction, much of it converted to multi-unit. Old assemblies, shared walls and aging stacks mean a loss rarely stays where it started.
02 Local Conditions
Downhill runoff during heavy rain overwhelms grading and foundation drainage and enters below grade. The house that floods is often not the one the leak started at.
Both creeks have flooded repeatedly over more than a century. Properties in the low corridors carry real, recurring exposure rather than theoretical risk.
Nineteenth-century single-family buildings cut into apartments carry plumbing they were never designed for. One failure upstairs travels through every unit below.
Masonry holds water differently from frame construction and dries more slowly. Drying these buildings takes longer, and cutting the equipment early is what causes the callback.
